Title: President, Owner
Company: Uncommon Closet LLC
Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States
Korrigan Rose Burton, President and Owner at Uncommon Closet LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in retail.
Ms. Burton became involved in her profession because her fiancé, who was a transgender woman, had trouble finding clothing. At the time, she was working at another shop and did not feel comfortable bringing her to that shop. The clothes were not inviting to the LGBTQ community, so she wanted to open a shop where people could feel comfortable no matter what body type they had, gender, or sexuality. It was designed for anyone to come and get clothing tailored and not feel judged or looked down upon. She started out in theater doing costuming but soon realized that theater was not for her. She then did an internship at a tailor shop and after 3 weeks, she decided she wanted her own shop and the rest was history. Ms. Burton chose her career path because she really enjoys sewing. It is her happy place. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Millikin University in 2014 and took graduate school coursework in costume technology and theater.
The most rewarding aspect of being a business owner of Uncommon Closet LLC is having her own schedule. The highlight of her career is being able to open a storefront and being able to work hands-on with her clients. Ms. Burton enjoys being able to see the changes that she is making and the difference that she is making with those in her community along with those around her. As a testament to her success, Ms. Burton was named the Best Non-Binary Tailor by Chicago Magazine. She is also a member of the LGBT Chamber of Commerce and the Illinois Chamber of Commerce.
