G.W. Bill Bouffioux, Owner, Manager at XY Bison Ranch, Ltd., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in bison ranching.

Mr. Bouffioux became involved in his profession because it was one-fifths of the work of cattle for three times the money. Bison are very self-sufficient with virtually no calving problems and can withstand the most severe winters without shelters. He also grew up on a farm. He and his wife bought a ranch, which had Hartford cattle but it was too much work for the family. They start calving in early March and they have to be put in the barn and watched for six weeks. It was a lot of work. They are also susceptible to more diseases, such as pink eye and foot rot. He started talking to a bison producer and found that the bison are much more durable animals. They were able to cut the workload down to a tenth of what they had to do with the cattle. Mr. Bouffioux received an Associate’s Degree in farm mechanics with honors from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1963.

The highlight of Mr. Bouffioux’s career was winning the XY Ranch Awards for Premier Breeder, Grand Champion Bull, Grand Champion Female, Reserve Champion Female, Fourth Place for a two-year-old bull, and high-selling Ylg Heifer. Mr. Bouffioux started his career in 1965 as the owner of a Hartford Cattle Ranch and kept the ranch until 1989. He became the owner and manager of XY Bison Ranch in 1989 and is still running the ranch to this day. As a testament to his success, Mr. Bouffioux was named Best in British Columbia Showcase Farm Competition and has received 85 trophies including 15 Grand Champion Males. He has also been inducted as a member of the BC Bison Association and the Canadian Bison Association.
