Nina Sodji, Owner and Head Chef at Okra African Grill, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in restaurant management.
Harboring a lifelong love for cooking, Ms. Sodji excels as the owner and head chef of Okra African Grill in Omaha, Nebraska. A native of Togo, a West African nation, she immigrated to the United States in 1994 with a business visa and a dream. Finding initial success as the owner of an African grocery market, she eventually established her first restaurant, in which she was met with many customers and great praise. Deeply connected to her heritage, she has been devoted to creating “delicious, slow-cooked African dishes made from the heart” at her current establishment since 2018. Ms. Sodji’s advice to aspiring business owners is to be a people person, be patient and be determined throughout their journey.
Notably, Ms. Sodji earned a Bachelor of Science in business management in 2018 and enrolled in culinary school at Metro Community College. While at the aforementioned college, she discovered that the foods she had grown up enjoying in Togo were derived from the French, Spanish, German and Indian cultures, along with neighboring African countries. Although these flavors are a result of Togo’s complicated history, she describes the flavors as “magical” and the reason for her curiosity in experimenting to create the best unique dishes possible. Reflecting upon her illustrious career, she attributes her success to hard work, dedication and a passion for sharing her culture through cuisine. In the coming years, she hopes to continue enjoying the continued success of her business. In addition, Ms. Sodji would like to host a cooking show that can bring people of all ages and cultures together.
