Armando La China, Retired Owner of Southern Payphones Co., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in business leadership.
Born and raised in Italy, Mr. La China began playing soccer as a child and continued even after moving to New York City as a young adult. He earned a Bachelor of Science in economics from Hunter College and continued to live in the city, where a soccer teammate introduced him to the games of tennis constantly being played in Central Park. Mr. La China went to watch and fell in love with the game after just a few minutes of observing the courts full of players dressed head-to-toe in white. He began practicing at local handball courts and discovered a gift for the sport that led him to become CEO of the Town Tennis Club in 1979 and to go professional at tennis in 1991. Mr. La China and his girlfriend traveled the world as he competed for the next seven years, until his retirement from tennis in 1998.
As Mr. La China recalls, by 1998 he “felt he had traveled enough,” and returned to Florida, where he established Southern Payphones Company after sensing the lucrative growth opportunities in the payphone industry. Eventually, Southern Payphones Company became the largest operator in the region, and Mr. La China spent several years on the board of directors of the Florida Payphone Association. After 20 years of success as the owner of Southern Payphones Company, Mr. La China retired in 2018 and has focused on enjoying retirement and cultivating his legacy in the area business community. Mr. La China has completed his autobiography, “Against All Odds I Did It, Why Can’t You?” and looks forward to its publication in mid-2021. He emphasizes that his family is the closest thing to his heart, and looks forward to continuing to spend more time with them in his retirement.
