David Sumo Meltzer, Owner of Sumo San Antonio, LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Japanese restaurant ownership.

As an expert restauranteur, Mr. Meltzer learned everything he knew about Japanese cuisine from an elderly Japanese gentleman who settled in Texas from Japan. Considered to be the first master of sushi to relocate to Texas, the elderly gentleman taught Mr. Meltzer the ins and outs of the hospitality industry as well as techniques for maintaining sushi and Japanese restaurants. Feeling inspired, Mr. Meltzer subsequently began his career at Benihana: Sushi & Japanese Steakhouse, where he garnered experience and perfected his technique. He thereafter established Sumo Japanese Steakhouse, a traditional Japanese Hibachi Steakhouse featuring expertly prepared sushi and dishes through the Japanese style of cooking known as “Teppanyaki” by the most experienced sushi chefs in San Antonio.

Mr. Meltzer not only manages the restaurant, but he cooks and prepares sushi as well. As a result of his successes, Sumo San Antonio, LLC, has been named the Best Japanese Restaurant in San Antonio from 2019 to 2020 and the Best Steak House in San Antonio in 2021 by the San Antonio Express News. Additionally, he is a recipient of the Gold Award and the Reader’s Choice Award from the San Antonio Mews in 2018. He is proud to have been recognized as a Marquis Who’s Who Top Professional. He attributes his success to his father, who provided him with the drive to follow his passions.

Mr. Meltzer has served as the president of the Organization of Filipinos in San Antonio Texas from 2019 to 2021 and the founder and vice president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in San Antonio from 2018 to 2020. Looking toward the future, he aims to turn Sumo San Antonio into a national corporation with franchised locations across the country. In addition, his goal is to establish a casual restaurant titled Sumo Sumo Hibachi Bar.
