Title: Owner
Company: Wild Birds Unlimited
Location: West Nyack, New York, United States
Scott S. Gunther, Owner at Wild Birds Unlimited, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nature education.
Mr. Gunther was inspired to get involved in his profession because of his love of animals and the environment. He has always had a knack to work with animals and teaching people how to care for them, as well as how to respect the environment. Mr. Gunther hurt his back when he was working at the Bronx Zoo, and could not do the heavy labor work, such as working with animals hands-on. He had to find something where he could still teach people about how to live with animals, while still being able to do something he appreciated. When he found Wild Birds Unlimited, he was able to teach people how to turn their backyards into a natural habitat with the birds mainly, and then how to get along with the other wildlife animals in the yard, so he liked that. Before starting his career, Mr. Gunther took coursework in environmental science and biology at Ramapo College of New Jersey in 1993.
Mr. Gunther commenced his career with the Bronx Zoo in 1993 as a wild animal keeper, remaining in that position until 1999. Also during that time, he was a manager of Pet Place II from 1986 to 2005. Since 2006, he has been the owner of Wild Birds Unlimited. Mr. Gunther considers the highlight of his career to be when he received the Friend of The Environment Award from Wild Birds Unlimited. With that award, you have to be nominated for the effort that the store and storeowner have put forward by giving back to the local environmental group and foundations around by the other stores. For Mr. Gunther that was a big award.
Mr. Gunther has the top store in the franchise. He believes they are not going anywhere, and once the pandemic lifts they will go back to doing their programs in the store. Once the community is back up and functioning, they will do their outdoor programs, collaborating with all the nature centers and the Bergin County Auto Bond Society. He is eager to get back out there doing those programs. As a testament to his success, Mr. Gunther has received various awards for helping out by nature centers, an award from the Auto Bond Society and an award from The Scout Troops.
