M.J. Daswani, Owner at Daswani Clothiers, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in design and tailoring.

A third-generation designer and tailor of Daswani Clothiers, Mr. Daswani began working in the family business in high school, taking care of more behind-the-scenes technical work. During his undergraduate years at the University of Connecticut, he continued to help the business during the summers, which ultimately grew his passion and love for the fashion industry. Fueling his creative desires, Mr. Daswani took a summer course at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, where an instructor encouraged him to pursue the menswear program. He decided to take on the challenge, after weighing his options, and spent several months putting together a design portfolio to get into the program.

Notably, Mr. Daswani achieved a graduate degree in menswear from the Fashion Institute of Technology, having also taken coursework in tailoring at the Saville Row Academy in London, England. In the earlier years of his career, he worked in several men’s stores between 2010 and 2016 in roles such as assistant tailor, sales floor fitter, creative director, assistant to creative director and general merchandise manager. Since 2016, Mr. Daswani has served as the owner of Daswani Clothiers in West Hartford, Connecticut, where his expertise fuses the finest hand-tailored workmanship and premiere one-on-one stylized consultations. From pairing socks with pants to making suit jacket buttonholes by hand, he boasts state-of-the-art, old-world service for some of the most distinguished gentlemen nationwide.

Leading Daswani Clothiers to great success, the business was listed as a Top Men’s Store in Connecticut by Connecticut Magazine in 2018 and 2019. Mr. Daswani attributes his success to his family, their customers and the staff, adding that their support is what encourages him to get through tough times. He also credits the influence of Nelson Suriel, a sales mentor, and Briana Taylor, his art teacher. Presently, he maintains membership with the West Hartford Center Business Association and the West Harford Chamber of Commerce and volunteers with Dress for Success, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, St. Jude’s Junior League, Food Share and Friends of Feeney. In five years’ time, Mr. Daswani aims to continue doing what is he doing, while also continuing to grow the businesses’ market and maintaining their brand with the help of technology.
