A lifelong entrepreneur and natural educator, Mr. O’Connor celebrates over 40 years of success as a public school teacher and administrator and 18 years as the owner of the Lakeview Restaurant. A cozy diner, known for its “classic Southern hospitality” and homestyle dishes, the Lakeview Restaurant has been called one of Fancy Gap, Virginia’s best-kept secrets and is known by visitors as a local gem not to be missed. In addition to running the Lakeview Restaurant, Mr. O’Connor is the owner of a greenhouse specializing in cultivating tomato and camellia plants, and manages all sales and marketing for the company.
Before turning his focus to his business endeavors, Mr. O’Connor earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Education in educational administration from the University of North Carolina. He began his educational career as a teacher at Andrews High School before being named assistant principal of Smith High School, where he spent the next six years. Mr. O’Connor left Smith High School to work in district-level administration and spent nine years as assistant director of bus transportation for the Greensboro City School District before returning to the classroom as a social studies teacher at Grimsley High School. Before retiring from education, Mr. O’Connor would also go on to serve as an administrator at Grimsley High School, where he supervised student disciplinary programs including in-school and after-school suspensions. He was named Teacher of the Year in 1979 and was a two-time Administrator of the Year at Smith High School, and he hopes to return to education as a college instructor in the coming years. Mr. O’Connor credits much of his success to the values he developed through his rich background as an Eagle Scout and Boy Scout Camp counselor. He is the recipient of the 2020 National Eagle Scout Award and the Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow, and continues to enjoy time spent outdoors bicycling, camping, and exploring the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina.
