Mr. Gunewardane’s interest in engineering began as a child, as he recalls in school he was always intrigued by physics, mathematics and chemistry subjects and impressed by the fact that people apply these subjects to the activities of their daily living. Later, in 1973, he achieved a master’s degree in engineering from the Institution of Mechanical Engineering in the United Kingdom before taking on the position as area director engineering for Middle East and Africa with InterContinental Hotels Groups in 1977, remaining through 2007. In addition, he served as executive director of engineering for Emirates Palace Hotel from 2007 to 2011, was an independent hotel engineering consultant in 2011 and 2012 and spent nearly five years with Kempinski Hotels. Today, Mr. Gunewardane excels as vice president of Hotel Solutions Partnership and as president and chief executive officer of North American Global Tech Services, LLC, roles he commenced in 2012.
Specializing in developing technology-driven design for the hospitality industry, Mr. Gunerwardane considers his greatest achievement to be his publications, including his two books published in 2018 entitled “Sustainable Building Standards and Guidelines for Mixed-Use Buildings” and “Technical Standards and Design Guidelines: Mixed-Use Buildings.” He attributes his success to working with notable professionals who supported and guided him through his tenure. A fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, he also holds membership with the Institute of Refrigeration Engineers, UK, National Fire Protection Association, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Association of Energy Engineers and Construction Specifications Institute. In five years’ time, Mr. Gunerwardane hopes to further develop and expand his company and promote the concept of reengineering in the hospitality industry.
