He is very involved in expert witness testimony on Legionnaires disease but also on indoor fungi. Since 1981, Dr. Gilpin has owned and operated the Dr. Richard W. Gilpin LLC practice in Baltimore. He has also provided his skills and expertise as a compliance officer, adjunct professor, and assistant director of environmental health and safety and biosafety at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, as well as an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University and associate professor at Thomas Jefferson University and the Medical College of Pennsylvania, among many other positions.
As an accomplished author, Dr. Gilpin has contributed his work to more than 64 publications, book chapters, scientific journals and magazines, with more than 426 citations. His work has landed him a number of accolades, including being an American Biological Safety Association International Certified Biosafety Professional since 1998, an American Biological Safety Association International Registered Biosafety Professional since 1994 and is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from Chesapeake Area Biological Safety Association in 2020. In 2017 and 2018, he received a National Science Foundation International Certificate of Recognition and in 2016, was the recipient of the American Society for Microbiology 50-Year Certificate of Appreciation among many other accolades. Looking toward the future, Dr. Gilpin endeavors to continue with Legionella testing and conduct more training.
