Michael L. Powell, Owner at BeHome LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in homebuilding.
In 2017, Mr. Powell founded BeHome LLC in Blue Springs, a successful custom home developer and builder. The company specializes in homes, floor plans, custom home design and construction, and “smart” homes featuring home automation systems that monitor and/or control home attributes such as lighting, climate, entertainment systems and appliances.
After coursework at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, Mr. Powell gained valuable initial experience as a regional manager in renovation and construction for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage from 2002 to 2005. For 16 years from 1999 to 2015, he headed real estate development firm Powell Enterprises and Development in Kansas City and subsequently excelled as vice president of residential development with Syler Construction and GJM Development from 2013 to 2018. He also served during this time as owner and publisher of KC Marketing Solutions, under whose banner he published three monthly real estate and monthly magazines.
Mr. Powell’s memberships include the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Developers Council, Home Builders Association (HBA) and since 2017 he has been chairman of the Kansas City Home Builders Association (KCHBA). Among his honors is his naming as Kansas City’s Premiere Home Builder in 2019 and The Next Generation Builder of Kansas City for 2022, and BeHome LLC was listed in Kansas City Homes and Style’s Top Homes of the Year in 2020 and 2021.
Mr. Powell notes that his success resulted from recruiting and hiring the best talent, as well as putting them in the best position to perform. He was inspired to create his own real estate development business while working as a minority partner for another developer. He was on vacation with his family one time and he was feeling exhausted and unable to enjoy their trip and found himself telling his wife, “I just want to be home.” The idea of “being home” stayed in his mind and kept growing until he resolved to become an independent home developer. The statement became the name and brand of his company. Mr. Powell notes that his four children are his greatest accomplishments. His wife, who has always supported his dreams, is a very successful real estate agent in Kansas City.
Mr. Powell’s aspiration for the coming years is to increase his sales to $200 million. He sets his goals on attributes rather than on profitability so that everyone can celebrate with them. Ultimately, he considers the main objective is to continue growing the company in order to provide a good environment for his community’s families and create their legacies.
