Kathy Smart, Owner at Minnie’s Beach Café, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in restaurant management.
After moving to Florida from Cape Cod in 1989, where she excelled as an accountant with a plumbing supplies company for two decades, Ms. Smart began working at Brian’s Sunny Side Up Café in 1995 and continuing its success as one of the premier restaurants in the Tampa-St. Petersburg metropolitan area after purchasing it in 2004 with her spouse Mary and other business partners, changing its name to Minnie’s Beach Café, Inc. She helped to guide the restaurant through the COVID-19 pandemic including a period when it had to close and prepare only takeout orders. For her efforts, Ms. Smart shared the Anna Maria Sun Person of the Year honors in 2020.
Ms. Smart experienced a surprising moment of generosity when the pandemic happened and the shutdown came. She began to receive checks from people all over the country that had been in their restaurant because they wanted to make sure it stayed open.
According to Ms. Smart, her primary success characteristics include her ability to read people, listen to people, and her sense of humor. She has learned throughout her career that if you treat people with respect and kindness, they will treat you the same way, and has made it her personal mission to turn those who hold grudges into joyful people. Ms. Smart wishes to be remembered for her ability to make others feel as if they are a part of her family.
