After many years expertly providing food and janitorial services to Elmdorf Air Force Base in Alaska, Aberdeen Proving Ground Army Base in Edgewood, Maryland, Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County, New Jersey, Fort Monmouth and operating the Girls Friday Secretarial School, since 2013 Ms. Griffin has owned and operated the Blythewood Seafood Emporium and Barbecue Haven in Columbia, South Carolina, the dream of a grandson in the family fish business. After he began selling fish on weekends from the street. Requests from customers to open a fish market led to the opening of Blythewood Seafood and later, restaurant services were added. The restaurant is renowned for its homemade hush puppies, potato salad and tartar sauce.
Ms. Griffin’s professional memberships include the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs Inc. and New Jersey Board of Education. For her entrepreneurial and community efforts, she has been honored with awards from the National Council of Negro Women, a Service Award from the New Jersey Board of Education, and an award for serving as the chairman of an urban renewal Project in Edison, New Jersey.
Ms. Griffin attributes her success to her upbringing. Her mother was an entrepreneur who sold women’s apparel, and she would accompany her mother on Saturdays and she was assigned to keep records of her mother’s sales. She considers her career highlight founding her secretarial school wherein she offered legal, medical, and executive secretarial trainings, and in which she had licensed professionals handle the trainings. Ms. Griffin oversaw the first minority-owned secretarial school in New Jersey.
Now in her nineties, Ms. Griffin is still very mobile and independent. She works and drives every day and would like readers to know what she is a fighter and she fights for what is right and has helped a lot of young people start their own businesses free of charge. In coming years, she is looking to spend more time relaxing and perhaps retire for good.
