Since 2009, Ms. Murdoch has prospered as the owner of Jenny Layne Bakery, a premier supplier of cakes, pies and cookies in dozens of varieties, operating as an appointment-only venue supplying weddings and similar gatherings serving the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. To hone her business management skills, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in business management and entrepreneurship from Texas Tech University in Lubbock in 2009. Jenny Lane Bakery has captured Best of Weddings honors in The Knot Wedding Magazine each year from 2014 to the present.
Ms. Murdoch considers herself to be an expert cake maker. She thinks that there is a big difference between owning a bakery, being a baker and art-inspired culinary skills. In addition, Ms. Murdoch maintains that she can keep up with the best in cake decorating. She usually begins her day by checking her emails to see if any urgent attention is needed, and then shops to make sure that the bakery has the inventory it needs. Ms. Murdoch manages employees’ responsibilities and delegates what needs to be done for the week. Much of her day is spent designing cakes and customer service and confirming and making sure that the bakery is on time for weddings that people are getting what they need and that all loose ends are tied up on their end.
Ms. Murdoch attributes her success to word of mouth and her customer service in the way that she relates to people with whom she works. She values the relationships that she has created with her customers and with her vendors, and that level of care definitely contributed to her success. Ms. Murdoch entered the business because she has always loved baking beginning with her childhood years, and later worked in a bakery where she learned to decorate cakes. As a career highlight, she cites winning a competition on the Cake Hunters TV show on the Food Network. She also appeared on Dallas Cakes, a documentary show featuring Dallas bakeries. In the coming years, Ms. Murdoch would like to supply baked goods to venues throughout the South and would also like to get into volunteering and selling real estate.
