Much beloved in his local community for his delicious barbecue recipes, Mr. Smith has distinguished himself as the owner of Smitty’s Taste of the Bayou, a Louisiana-style eatery based in the South Bay of San Diego. The restaurant has garnered acclaim for its family-friendly atmosphere and savory menu, including such favorites as pork rib, shrimp, catfish, chicken, mac and cheese, and baked beans.
Affectionately known as “Smitty,” Mr. Smith left his home in Louisiana at the age of 17 to join the U.S. Navy as a mess specialist and machinist’s mate. During this time, he appealed to his fellow sailors with his barbecue cooking, through which he drew the encouragement to begin selling food in 2013, starting with only $500 in savings. After working out of both a coffee shop and a brewery, he was invited to participate in a business proposal to establish a food court in National City, California, which led to the creation of Smitty’s Taste of the Bayou.
Well-qualified in his field, Mr. Smith holds a chef certificate from the San Diego Culinary Institute, which he earned in 2016. In accounting for his success, he credits his natural charisma and propensity for making people laugh. Believing firmly in the efficacy of hard work and dedication, Mr. Smith aspires to parlay his success as a restaurateur into a national franchise and open branches of Smitty’s throughout the United States, having already committed to establishing a new location in his hometown in Louisiana.
