A great enthusiast for swordplay and armed personal combat, Mr. Kenney serves as the lead instructor at his martial arts school. Based in Kansas City, Missouri and founded in 2015, the talented staff at Bear Swords utilizes modern athletic techniques and safety standards to teach students in the use of weapons from a variety of martial traditions. Drawing from experience in Olympic fencing, “boffer” fighting, Renaissance festivals and live-action roleplaying, Mr. Kenney previously taught students the art of swordsmanship at his personal residence before heeding the advice of his wife and establishing a formal school, which has since expanded to multiple locations and was lauded as the Best Martial Arts School in Kansas City in 2022.
Outside of his work as a martial arts instructor, Mr. Kenney is a talented programmer, and worked in information technology throughout much of his early career. Throughout the course of his professional journey, he has worked at such companies as Advanced Processing Services, the Keefe Group, the Service Management Group, Quest Diagnostics, Stackify, Bayer Business Services and Remel Inc. Before embarking upon his professional journey, he studied psychology and computer science at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Looking toward the future, Mr. Kenney aspires for Baer Swords to expand its operations in order to accommodate more students and offer multiple classes in tandem, and to eventually retire from his programming job and focus on helping the school become a pillar in its local community.
