Leveraging nearly four decades of experience, Ms. Elrod is a proven expert in the field of martial arts and self-defense training. Since 1985, she has served as the owner and senior instructor at the American Academy of Martial Arts, one of the largest martial arts schools in the United States. Between the organization’s three locations in Columbia, Fulton and Glenwood, Maryland, Ms. Elrod and her colleagues host more than 1,200 students on a regular basis, teaching Taijutsu, Taikido Jitsu, Jiu Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do. Adjacent to her primary interests, she also remains dedicated to dog rescues. To wit, Ms. Elrod manages a dog sanctuary, Hemp Dogs Inc., where she cares for disabled, mistreated and unwanted dogs.
As part of her vocational journey, Ms. Elrod pursued a formal education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and criminal justice, cum laude, at the University of Maryland in 1988. In addition to her academic credentials, she was also certified as an adoption coordinator by K-9 Lifesavers Dog Rescue in 2011. Ms. Elrod is similarly proud to have earned her 10th degree black belt in Taikido Jitsu, ninth degree black belt in Budo Taijutsu, and second degree black belts in Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do. To commemorate her achievements, she was previously honored as an Instructor of the Year by the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, where she maintains her professional membership. In light of her fulfilling career, Ms. Elrod has largely attributed her success to her perseverance and dedicated work ethic.
