Location: Salt Lake City, Utah, United States

Mel Calvert, Founder and President at Authors Symposium, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in publishing.

A former musician, comedian, magician, and television show host who has performed around the world, Mr. Calvert has excelled as the founder and president of Authors Symposium, a publishing company focusing on publishing authors without a literary agent at no up-front cost, since 2020. In addition to this position, he has been additionally active as an entrepreneur, including as the owner of Wonderkind of Mobile Homes in Southern California, as well as an agent with the Prudential Insurance Company. Between 2008 and 2022, he was appointed as the chief communications officer for ViA Global Assets AG in Switzerland. Mr. Calvert has found success with his written works as well, having authored such works as “How I Quit Smoking & Lived to Tell About It!: The Story Behind ‘7 Steps to Life’” in 1991, “X’s Fences and Cows” in 2012, “A Funny Thing Happened to Me on the Way to My Funeral” in 2013, and “Never Again – A Slap in the Face” for AOPA Pilot Magazine in 2013, and co-authored “Bertha’s Battle: A Lesson in Faith and Survival” in 2014.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Calvert pursued an education at Glendale College, completing coursework in business, music and drama between 1949 and 1951. Soon thereafter, he served his country in an impressive military tenure in the U.S. Army over the course of 30 months, advancing to the rank of lieutenant during the Korean War and becoming both the communications director and the youngest regimental communications officer for the 11th Airborne Division during this time. In the years that followed, he collaborated with his wife as the internationally acclaimed musical duo ‘Sunny and Mel,’ through which they released the album “Here’s a Little Sunshine” alongside the Johnny Douglas Orchestra. Likewise, Mr. Calvert hosted a television program titled “Trailers, Trips, and Tunes,” which remained on the air for five years.

In 2008, Mr. Calvert was presented with the Meritorious Service Award from Knights of Columbus Council #11668 as a testament to his outstanding contribution to producing “You’ve Got Talent” to benefit the Knights of Columbus and the Florida Special Olympics Organization. He has attributed his success to his steadfast determination and perseverance. Though he fondly recalls his many achievements, he is incredibly proud of his efforts as a husband and father, as his son became a successful animator, pilot and man of faith.  Looking toward the future, Mr. Calvert hopes to complete his next book, “50 Famous People I’ve Known Well Or Been Close Enough to Throw A Shoe At,” while continuing to assist others and make a positive impact on the world.
