John Williams, Owner at Ruff Country Dog Resort LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in animal science.
Mr. Williams became involved in his profession after spending eight years as a veterinary technician while pursuing his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in animal science. He always planned to have his own business. He initially grew up with a love for horses but as life progressed, he decided to begin his business geared towards dogs. Working in the industry for many years and seeing the need for a business based more toward the needs of dogs is what led him to the idea. He was attracted to his profession because of his upbringing, he grew up on a farm where they raised and trained animals, so he was always involved with animals. He matriculated at Mississippi State University earning a Bachelor of Science in animal and dairy science in 2008 and a Master of Science in animal physiology in 2017.
Mr. Williams attributes his success to the genuine care and attention he displays to the animals. The owners can see by their dog’s behavior that they are in a fun, loving, caring and safe environment that they enjoy. He began his career as a farm manager for Vicki Kinsey Quarter Horses in 2003. The following year he became a veterinary assistant at the Animal Medical Center and then in 2005, he was a veterinary assistant at Purvis Equine Center until 2006. The next year he was a webmaster at Pine Belt Trailers, before becoming a horse show manager at Mississippi State University in 2008. He stayed with the institution until 2010, also holding the role of a graduate teaching assistant. In 2011, he joined PetSmart and remained with the company until 2016. While there, he was a support manager and an assistant manager. Since 2016, he has owned Ruff Country Dog Resort, LLC. Looking ahead, Mr. Williams would like to expand and open more locations with a second location in Tennessee. He is now in the process of building a new facility that will be an expansion of his current one.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Williams has received myriad awards, including but not limited to Memphis Most Winner for Best Pet Boarding by The Commercial Appeal in 2019 and was the Mississippi Amateur Quarter Horse Association All-Around Champion from 2005 to 2007. Additionally, he earned the Mississippi Quarter Horse Youth Association Sportsmanship Award in 2004, Lloyd R. Smith Scholarship in 2003 and Outstanding Senior 4-H’er in 2002. Notably, Mr. Williams has also been inducted as a member of the International Boarding and Pet Services Industry, the Local Area Chamber of Commerce and the Business Networking International.
