Edward Schaefer, Owner of Bellevue Berry & Pumpkin Ranch, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in agriculture.
Mr. Schaefer is a retired agricultural economist and the owner of Bellevue Berry Farm & Pumpkin Ranch, an 80-acre farm specializing in agricultural tourism and private events. Born into a ranching family and raised on a farm, Mr. Schaefer’s passion for agriculture started early. Inspired by his father’s background as Chief of Nutrition for the United States Public Health Service under President Dwight Eisenhower, Mr. Schaefer studied agricultural business, policy, and economics at Colorado State University, earning a Master’s degree in agriculture. With the encouragement of early mentor Jim Davis, Mr. Schaefer pursued a career in agricultural policy administration after graduation. He spent the next eight years with the United States Department of Agriculture as an accountant and food analyst, followed by a stint as a disaster relief officer with the United States Embassy in Costa Rica. Through the 1970s, Mr. Schaefer worked as an agricultural economist, consultant, and agriculturist for the Department of International Development and the National Academy of Sciences, earning a Meritorious Service Award from the Comptroller General in 1979.
In 1983, after spending 16 years as a federal government employee, Mr. Schaefer stepped down to focus on running the Bellevue Berry Farm and Pumpkin Ranch. A five-time winner of the Harprey County People’s Choice Award for Best Wedding Venue, the Bellevue Berry Farm and Pumpkin Ranch offers visitors year-round tours, festivals and events, and Taco Tuesdays in addition to hosting weddings, parties, and seasonal events including a haunted hayride and pumpkin patch. As an expert in the business and a cornerstone of the area’s agritourism industry, Mr. Schaefer is a member of the Agricultural Economic Society and has contributed to prior editions of the Yearbook of Agriculture. He attributes his long-term success to his love for the industry and the support of his family, and he plans to continue running the farm for years to come.
