Mr. Spilker has excelled as an award-winning landscape photographer. Growing up on a farm in rural Bethel, Missouri instilled in him a fascination for the wonders of nature and friends who saw and enjoyed his photography encouraged him to make it his profession, and he established Martin Spilker Photography in 1999 to distribute his work. He has exhibited his nature portraits throughout the country, and “Storm over El Morro,” a black-and-white portrayal of a storm approaching Box Canyon at El Morro National Monument in New Mexico, captured a prestigious Monochrome Award in 2018. His photography has also achieved two honorable mentions in the same competition. In 2004, Mr. Spilker joined the Missouri Artisans Association as a juried artist member.
Mr. Spilker acquired an associate degree in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1985 and has provided superior service with Missouri Book Service in Columbia besides his photography work. He has been able to achieve and prosper in nature photography despite suffering from McArdle’s Syndrome, a rare genetic muscular disorder.
As a career highlight, Mr. Spilker cites his portrayal of the McBaine Burr Oak, the largest and oldest tree of its species in Missouri. At over 400 years old, it boasts of an impressive 287-inch circumference and is approximately 90 feet tall with a 130-foot spread. In the coming years, Mr. Spilker is hoping for the further growth and success of Martin Spilker Photography and in addition would like to give the proceeds of his photography to ministries that help and feed the poor.
