Since 2021, Mr. Stephens has prospered as owner and operator of Capital Escape and Axe Throwing in Frankfort, Kentucky, a premier “escape room” entertainment venue in which in which a team of players discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms to attain a specific goal, often to escape from the site of the game, in a limited amount of time. In separate competitions at the venue, players vie against each other in hitting targets by throwing axes.
Prior to founding Capital Escape and Axe Throwing, Mr. Stephens has provided superior service as a set designer and owner of Haunted House Attractions, which comprises of two attractions, Nightmare Haunted House and Terror on Tates Creek, that employ animatronics, detailed sets and gory costumes to produce entertaining, terror-inducing horror experiences. The business was honored as Best Haunted House Festival in Nicholasville, Kentucky from 2019 to 2021. In addition, Mr. Stephens served as owner and carpenter with a construction company from 1990 to 2008.
Mr. Stephens began working for his father in the construction industry when he was in high school. After flourishing in the industry for 18 years, Mr. Stephens found himself out of work due to the housing crash of 2008. He then switched his focus to the haunted house business since he has always been a big fan of horror movies. He built a haunted house in his parents’ basement at the age of 10. Mr. Stephens worked at haunted house sets for two years and then started his own set in a backyard. He eventually rented a warehouse and started a haunted house business. Mr. Stephens has been building haunted house sets for 17 years now. In 2021, he added escape rooms and axe throwing.
Mr. Stephens is proud of the longevity of his haunted house business. Many haunted house attractions come and go, but he considers the fact that his is still growing after 17 years to be a notable accomplishment. In the coming years, he plans to add miniature golf and an entertainment center to his attractions.
