With over 50 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Sancaktar has excelled as professor emeritus at the School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering at The University of Akron since 2020. He began his career in Istanbul, Turkey as a trainee engineer at the Chrysler Corporation from 1972 to 1973. He went on to work as a teaching assistant at Robert College from 1971 to 1974 before immigrating to the United States later that year. He served as a research assistant at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1974 to 1975 and at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1976. He excelled at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as an instructor from 1977 to 1978. He continued his career at Clarkson University as an instructor from 1978 to 1979, as an assistant professor from 1979 to 1985, and as associate professor with tenure from 1984 to 1996. At the University of Akron, he established himself as a professor with tenure from 1996 to 2020. Throughout his career, he served as a guest and visiting professor at universities and organizations around the world. Concurrent to these postings, he found success as owner and independent consultant at Akron Material Concepts since 2005 and as an international teacher of polymer short courses on virtual platform via the University of Akron since 2020.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Sancaktar pursued an education at Robert College in Turkey earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, with honors, in 1974. He concluded his studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, obtaining a Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 1976 and a PhD in engineering mechanics in 1979.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Sancaktar has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was presented with the Scientist Award from the International Association of Advanced Materials in 2021. He was recognized as a fellow by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1997, has served as Chair of ASME Technical Committee on Reliability Stress Analysis, and Failure Prevention from 1997 to 2008 and since 2013, and received various research grants from National Science Foundation, NASA, United States Army, and Northrop Grumman. Dr. Sancaktar and co-workers obtained approximately $4M Research and Grant support with a total of 56 projects during 1980 to 2022 and he has been awarded 4 U.S. patents.
