In this capacity, he advises clients on forest sustainability and fire prevention, and provides oversight for logging contractors for various projects. Mr. Murphy previously served throughout the vast majority of his career as an environmental specialist at several government organizations, including the U.S. Forest Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Throughout this time, he contributed to the Pojoaque Basin Regional Water System project, the Taos Indian Water Rights Settlement Project, and served as a contributing writer and editor for several environmental publications.
Beginning his career as a geology major at community college, Mr. Murphy was subsequently drawn into environmental advocacy and later attained a Bachelor of Applied Science at the University of Arizona. After further coursework in forest management and economics at the University of Maine, he received a master’s degree in forest resources and conservation at the University of Florida. Among his most cherished accomplishments as a forester, Mr. Murphy is particularly proud to have thinned out over 240 acres of land for a private owner in the state of Washington. Two decades later, a massive fire burned the surrounding wilderness, but left the owner’s home untouched – an enduring testament to his expertise. Looking toward the future, Mr. Murphy aspires to serve as the catalyst for a more sustainable approach to the profession of forestry.
