Margaret T. Ordoñez, PhD, owner at Ordoñez Textile Conservation Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in textiles and clothing.
With 47 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Ordoñez has excelled as owner of Ordoñez Textile Conservation Services since 2017. She began her career as a teacher of textile conservation in Kansas in 1976. She worked as a high school chemistry teacher for nine years before being appointed to the role of professor of the Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design at the University of Rhode Island from 1979 to 2011, at which point she was named professor emerita.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Ordoñez pursued an education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she earned a Bachelor of Science in clothing and textiles and a Master of Science in clothing and textiles. She concluded her studies at Florida State University, graduating with a PhD in textiles and clothing in 1977. Beyond her responsibilities within the field, she has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She found success with “Conservation Concerns in Fashion Collections: Caring for Problematic Twentieth-Century Textiles, Apparel, and Accessories” which she co-authored.
In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Ordoñez remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She was a member of the Conservation Society of America, the American Institute for Conservation, the American Close City Group Tennessee, the North American Textile Conservation Conference, and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colors. In light of her impressive undertakings, she has accrued several accolades throughout her career. In 2023, she was nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Institute for Conservation and selected as a fellow by the Costume Society of America.
