He began his career as a tae kwon do instructor with the Black Belt Association from 1975 to 1981. He worked as a martial arts instructor in Northport, Michigan from 1982 to 1992 and in Traverse City, Michigan from 1993 to 2002. Throughout his extensive career, he also worked as a martial arts instructor in Cheboygan, Michigan and Pioneer, Ohio. Before embarking on his professional path, he pursued an education at Northern Michigan University.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Starkey has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He works to imbue his clients and those he cares about with the belief that the human spirit is stronger than trauma and that they possess the strength to reach higher ground. He helps people restore their quality of life, secure employment and assists them with their personal finances. In addition to his primary vocation, he remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a tae kwon do, karate and Tang Soo Do trainer at Anytime Fitness and Jim’s Gym in Pioneer, Ohio.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Starkey has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He has achieved a 7th-degree blackbelt in tae kwon do, a 7th-degree dan in karate ju-jitsu, and a 2nd dan in Tang Soo Do. He finished in 1st place in multiple tae kwon do, karate, and Tang Soo Do competitions. He won the 2013 Tae Kwon Do World Championship in Cheboygan, Michigan. At the 2013 Tang Soo Do State Championships, he placed 1st in four different categories.
