At Roche, Dr. Barker garnered a stellar reputation from 1999 to 2009 before taking on the role of senior manager at Ventana Medical Systems, part of Roche Tissue Diagnostics, from 2009 to 2013. He continued his career at F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., finding success as a design quality engineering manager from 2013 to 2016 and a senior manager from 2016 to 2020. He was active as Apple health quality lead at Apple from 2020 to 2023.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Barker pursued an education at the University of South Dakota where he earned a bachelor’s degree in analytical chemistry in 1981 and a master’s degree in environmental electro analytical chemistry in 1984. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Delaware, graduating with a PhD in analytical chemistry, chemometrics, and analytical chemistry in 1989. He completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Hawaii in 1991. He is an ASQ certified software quality engineer and is a certified Six Sigma Green Belt.
Dr. Barker’s areas of expertise include quality management systems, quality compliance for the Food and Drug Administration, international standard compliance for medical devices, taking measurements, and design control. Beyond his responsibilities within the field, he has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He contributed to the Boy Scouts of America and Toastmasters.
Dr. Barker considers his groundbreaking development of the PCR platform for nucleic acid detection as one of his most noteworthy career accomplishments. The platform detected HIV, hepatitis viruses, and West Nile virus in donated blood, and its impact was felt worldwide. Not only did it gain almost 100% of the market in Thailand, one of the hotspots for HIV, but it was also used in blood banks across the United States and several other countries. Thanks to his work, HIV was significantly reduced, saving countless lives.
