Bruce K. DeShields, retired chief of county detectives at the Atlantic County prosecutor’s office and owner of Superior Security Consulting, LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law enforcement.
With over 45 years of experience to his credit, Mr. DeShields has excelled as co-owner of Superior Security Consulting LLC and in a number of positions with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. At the latter, he began his career as a county investigator from 1989 to 1998, the sergeant of county investigators from 1998 to 2006, the lieutenant of county detectives from 2005 to 2014, the captain of county investigators and commander of the litigation division and the crisis negotiations unit since 2014, and chief of county detectives since 2019.
Mr. DeShields began his career as a part-time police officer in Atlantic City, New Jersey from 1978 to 1981. He established himself as a patrol officer with the Stockton Police Department from 1982 to 1983 and the Department of Human Services Police Department from 1984 to 1989. His areas of expertise in law enforcement include homicide, shooting, and narcotics investigation, hostage negotiation, negotiator training, grant writing, and liaising with the United States Marshal’s office.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. DeShields pursued an education at Stockton University, where he earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in criminal justice in 2006. He concluded his studies at the University of Phoenix, graduating with a Master of Public Administration in 2018. He holds certifications from the Burlington County Police Academy, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, and the New Jersey State Police Homicide School. He accrued an FBI hostage/crisis certification and completed the New Jersey State Chiefs’ Command and Leadership Program.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. DeShields remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, the Investigator Association of New Jersey, the International Association of Homicide Investigators, and the Atlantic County Chiefs of Police Association. He held the role of vice president of the New Jersey chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. DeShields has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He received the New Jersey State Chiefs Medal of Valor and was presented with the Atlantic City Police Foundation Outstanding Service Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Muslim American Law Enforcement Association, the New Jersey P.B.A. Outstanding Service Award, and the F.B.I. Service Recognition Award. He formulated the Atlantic County Law Enforcement Advanced Diversion Program and the Atlantic County Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team.
