Mel Calvert, Founder and President at Authors Symposium, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in publishing.
A former musician, comedian, magician, and television show host who has performed around the world, Mr. Calvert has excelled as the founder and president of Authors Symposium, a publishing company focusing on publishing authors without a literary agent at no up-front cost, since 2020. In addition to this position, he has been additionally active as an entrepreneur, including as the owner of Tropic Trailer Sales Mobile Homes in Southern California during which time he hosted a daily radio show, “Trailers Trips and Tunes,” on a Los Angeles radio station. Prior to this, he served in the U.S. Army’s 11th Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict as the youngest communications officer (at the regimental level) in the history of the division. Upon his honorable discharge, Mr. Calvert went to work for The Prudential Insurance Company for 10 years as an agent.
Between 2008 and 2022, Mr. Calvert was appointed as the chief communications officer for ViA Global Assets AG in Switzerland. He has found success with his written works as well, having authored such works as “How I Quit Smoking & Lived to Tell About It!: The Story Behind ‘7 Steps to Life’” in 1991, “X’s Fences and Cows” in 2012, “A Funny Thing Happened to Me on the Way to My Funeral” in 2013, and “Never Again – A Slap in the Face” for AOPA Pilot Magazine in 2013, and co-authored “Bertha’s Battle: A Lesson in Faith and Survival” in 2014. Before embarking on his professional path, he pursued an education at Glendale College, completing coursework in business, music and drama between 1949 and 1951.In 1988, Mr. Calvert was presented with the Meritorious Service Award from Knights of Columbus Council #11668 as a testament to his outstanding contribution to producing “You’ve Got Talent,” which benefited the Knights of Columbus and the Special Olympics Organization.
Mr. Calvert credits his success to a steadfast determination and perseverance and is incredibly proud of his efforts as a father of six children. In fact, one of his sons was the youngest animator ever hired by The Walt Disney Company and owns an agency in Hollywood. All of his children are successful in various fields from sales to electrical engineering and more. He and his wife of 50 years, Sunny, have entertained in some of the greatest venues in many parts of the world. They recorded an album with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Johnny Douglas, who wrote all the music for the movie “The Railway Children,” and just celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with an old Showbiz friend in Las Vegas, Wayne Newton. A Published Author, Mr. Calvert, and Sunny currently reside in Salt Lake City, Utah, but are looking forward to returning to Florida.
