With over three decades of experience in technology, Mr. Durden specializes in application development, usability, and user experience. As the chief executive officer of Red One Corporation, an Internet development and marketing consultancy, since 2003, he manages accounting, billing, human resources, and client relationships. Additionally, he develops sophisticated software solutions and offers managed IT services, proactively addressing issues and ensuring clients’ systems run smoothly. Concurrently, he worked as director of information technology at Instawares, a restaurant equipment and supply company, from 2011 to 2014, senior IT developer at Home Depot from 2006 to 2008, and director of application development at SecureArc Inc. from 2004 to 2006.
Earlier roles include GUI Engineer at Mentisys Inc. from 2001 to 2004, senior web developer at Keyeon in 2001, senior site developer at marchFIRST, a global professional services firm that offers business improvement solutions to its customers, from 2000 to 2001, technology analyst at Accenture, a global professional services company that provides a range of services in strategy, consulting, digital, technology, and operations, from 1998 to 2000, web developer at Georgia-Pacific LLC from 1996 to 1998, and outside plant engineering intern at Bellsouth LLC, now AT&T Inc., from 1992 to 1996.
Prior to these accomplishments, he pursued an education at Georgia Institute of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Science in computer science in 1998. In addition, he is a certified scrum master with Scrum Alliance. He has also maintained various memberships with organizations, including the Entrepreneurs’ Organization, the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, and the South Cobb Business Association. Giving back to the community, he volunteers with the media department at this local church and works with St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Reflecting on what spurred his interest in technology and user experience, Mr. Durden recalls observing someone struggling to use software they had been familiar with for three years, which motivated him to study computer science, focusing on human factors, graphic visualization, and usability. This led him to start Red One Corporation to create intuitive software that enhances productivity and efficiency without needing a manual.
A standout moment in Mr. Durden’s career was developing a software system for the State of Georgia to subsidize childcare for needy families, allowing childcare providers to input service details and automatically calculate payments based on location, child age, and care type. In order to modernize the 30-year-old legacy system, the team had the challenging task of learning the system language to translate and migrate the old system into the new one. In 2022 alone, the new system processed about $1 billion in payments to childcare providers.
In the coming years, Mr. Durden envisions Red One expanding its presence in the government sector, building on its existing subcontracting work. He is dedicated to improving the widespread issue of unusable government applications and taking on more projects that benefit society. He also aspires to grow his business’s application software development and IT services units to address the abundance of poorly designed applications and help as many people as possible protect themselves from computer hacking.
