Spencer Daniel Proffer, chief executive officer at Meteor 17, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the music and entertainment industries.

Mr. Proffer has dedicated over five decades to the music and entertainment industry as a media producer and strategist. He currently excels as the chief executive officer of Meteor 17 (M17), a role he has held since 2000. M17 specializes in developing and producing music-themed content for film, television, digital media, and radio. 

Prior to this, Mr. Proffer led as chief executive officer of the Morling Manor Music Corporation from 1992 to 2001 and as president of Pasha Music Organization, in partnership with CBS Records and Studios, from 1977 to 1991—founding Pasha in 1978. He also served as the national executive director and head of creative and production for United Artists Records, a division of Transamerica, from 1974 to 1976 and assistant director of business affairs at CBS Records from 1972 to 1974. In addition to his production work, he is a visiting professor at Belmont University in Nashville and delivers lectures at UCLA and Syracuse University. 

During his career, Mr. Proffer has significantly contributed to the music and film industries, having produced over 200 albums and 22 films. His talent for songwriting has led to him authoring more than 750 songs performed by renowned artists, including Little River Band and Bette Midler. His work has garnered nominations for prestigious awards such as the Academy, Emmy, Golden Globe, Independent Spirit, and Grammy Awards. He has contributed to the production of millions of gold and platinum records as a producer, arranger, and writer. 

Before embarking on his career path, Mr. Proffer pursued a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government at the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating with honors in 1969. Following this, he went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, graduating with honors in 1972. 

Civic-minded, Mr. Proffer has invested his time and efforts into various organizations. He is a member of the board of advisors for the Osgoode Center for International Studies. Additionally, he donated 25 scholarships to Space Camp in 2013. He is also a board member at Gemini Live, an advisory board member with Tether Inc. since 2015, and has sat on the UCLA board of visitors since 2012. 

Additionally, Mr. Proffer has maintained a membership with the Producers Guild of America since 1998, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences since 1992, and the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences since 1980. Since 1972, he has also been invovled with the American Bar Association, the Beverly Hills Bar Association, and the California Bar Association, as well as a member of Broadcast Music Inc. since 1967. 

Mr. Proffer’s career highlights include receiving an honorary proclamation from the Governor of Alabama for his educational film “Space Warriors,” which won a SET Award for its informative portrayal of space travel. He also co-executively produced and co-wrote “To Gods and Monsters,” earning three Golden Globes, an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Picture. Additionally, he contributed to the albums “Blind Eyes” and “Playing to Win,” with the latter’s title track used by the US Olympic Committee for the 1984 volleyball competition. 

Mr. Proffer attributes his success to a strong work ethic and his passion for the profession, adding that treating others fairly and respectfully has significantly contributed to his accomplishments. He advises those aspiring to work in the industry that conducting business with integrity and never compromising your values are paramount. 

In the coming years, Mr. Proffer is dedicated to further exploring and documenting diverse cultures. He is preparing a project inspired by “Stand by Me” to highlight how society stands united, regardless of race, gender, or background. Outside of professional endeavors, he is passionate about traveling with his wife and children, hoping to leave a positive impact on people wherever he goes.
