Benjamin B. Young, president and chief information officer at PearlDiver Technologies, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in technology and coding.

With more than 35 years of experience, Mr. Young has established himself as a leader in the technology space, currently serving as the president and chief information officer of PearlDiver Technologies. Driven by a passion for using cutting-edge technology to help people, he founded PearlDiver with his brother in 2005. Mr. Young manages the software side of the business, which focuses on the development and improvement of medical database technology, offering medical schools, pharmaceutical companies and research hospitals tools for searching through 2 billion-plus medical. He leads 12 employees in two major projects with the aim of improving stability, updating the user interface and integrating artificial intelligence. Despite his executive position at the company, Mr. Young often works directly on the system’s code and has played a major part in increasing the system’s speed when pulling up information.

Prior to starting PearlDiver Technologies, Mr. Young contributed as a software architect at ChannelPoint. He built his reputation for code optimization while working as a senior software engineer at Cray Computer for nearly 10 years. In this position, Mr. Young garnered particular praise for improving the speed of the supercomputers being created at Cray Computer. These skills proved vital as he shifted into medical technology.

Mr. Young’s technology expertise is bolstered by a strong academic and military foundation. After completing high school, he joined the U.S. Army, and following his service, he worked for the U.S. Air Force in a contract capacity. Looking to advance in his career, Mr. Young earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science from the University of Minnesota in 1985. Both his education and the habits instilled in him during his military service have proven indispensable in his professional life.

When considering the success he’s found in his field, Mr. Young credits his curiosity, willingness to take chances, and passion for solving technical problems. He enjoyed troubleshooting issues from a young age and was renowned among friends and family for his ability to solve performance problems. Mr. Young also found motivation for his future career path while working with the St. Paul Public School Development Center during college. This role put him in touch with handicapped children and made him feel like he was making a genuine difference in their lives. That pushed Mr. Young to focus on the medical database field when he founded PearlDiver, allowing him to continue making a positive impact on people’s lives with his more technology-driven skill set.

Outside of his professional life, Mr. Young enjoys reading history books, traveling, skiing, and spending time with his wife and two children. Now approaching the age of 70, he is planning to retire within the next few years to spend more time with his grandchildren. Additionally, Mr. Young hopes to volunteer to work with children who have Down syndrome, while also planning to stay up to date on the latest progress in the world of computer science.
