With 50 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Lawton embarked upon his professional path at St. Procopius College, earning a bachelor’s degree in English language, literature, and letters from St. Procopius College in 1961. His passion for literature, kindled by limited library access in his early years, led him to pursue further education at the University of Michigan, where he earned both a Master of Arts in English language, literature, and letters and a Master of Library and Information Science in 1967. During his studies between 1963 and 1967, Mr. Lawton worked in the aforementioned university’s library, solidifying his love for books and literacy, which would shape his future career as a bookseller, librarian, and educator.
Mr. Lawton began his career as an English teacher at Hamady High School in Flint, Michigan from 1961 to 1963. He subsequently served as a rare book bibliographer and lecturer in information sciences at Syracuse University from 1967 to 1968 and a curator of manuscripts and assistant keeper of rare books at the Boston Public Library from 1968 to 1981. In 1981, he opened the Brookline Village Bookshop, which he operated until 2000, when he became proprietor of J. Lawton Booksellers. Concurrently, Mr. Lawton has excelled as an adjunct instructor of college composition at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology since 2014, after teaching at Quincy College from 2009 to 2012 and at Northeastern University from 2012 to 2014.
Reflecting on his long and successful career, Mr. Lawton attributes his achievements to hard work and dedication to literacy. His passion for books and teaching has been a constant in his life, as has his love for family, and he considers his children to be his most significant accomplishment. Notably, he was presented with the Non-Denominational Religious Award from the University of Michigan in 1966 as a testament to his exceptional endeavors. Looking toward the future, Mr. Lawton plans to continue thriving in his present positions, remaining active in his teaching and his lifelong passion for singing, even as he approaches his mid-eighties.
