Roger Shepherd, founder, chief executive officer, and creative director at panOpticon, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the arts.
With three and a half decades of experience, Mr. Shepherd has established a successful career in the arts, specializing in art documentation. He excels as the founder, chief executive officer, and creative director at Panopticon, a role he has held since 2006. His experience also includes typographer and designer for the Samuel Beckett Bilingual Project at Grove Press from 2005 to 2006, web designer, writer, and electronic archivist at Architectural Record from 1998 to 2005, exhibition curator for “Drawing in the Present Tense” from 1999 to 2000, founder and director of Visual Artists Inc. from 1980 to 1992, adaptive reuse study project manager for “A Design Study for Adaptive Reuse” in Weehawken, NJ from 1987 to 1988, faculty member for painting and printmaking at Artists for Environment Foundation from 1971 to 1981. He was also an exhibition curator for “Delaware Water Gap: American Landscape Painting 1825-1975” from 1975 to 1976, and chair of the Fine Arts Department at Parsons School of Design. He holds memberships with the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Catalogue Raisonné Scholars Association, College Art Association of America Inc., International Foundation for Art Research Inc., and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1970.
Reflecting on his path, Mr. Shepherd aspired to graduate from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, renowned as one of the premier art schools globally, which offered unique opportunities to interact with art connoisseurs and gain insight into the evolving art scene. Witnessing the transformation of SoHo into a vibrant art hub shortly after his graduation was truly inspiring. The influx of artists into the heart of Manhattan, rather than peripheral locations, deeply intrigued him. After graduation, he developed an interest in the mechanisms of art management and sales. His passionate immersion in the artistic process reflects his interest in art and his deep appreciation for the culture surrounding it. He has made significant contributions by playing a pivotal role in maintaining the harmony between art, its owners, and foundations. About a decade ago, he was involved with a German institution in publishing “The Artist Estate,” a handbook authored by Loretta Würtenberger.
Mr. Shepherd attributes his success to collaborating closely with fellow painters, printmakers, and other artists. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the intricacies of the creative process, noting how the size, shape, and relationships of materials play a crucial role. His focus on the physical qualities of materials and their impact on conceptualization, design, and overall value has been central to his approach. Looking ahead, he aims to expand his expertise and share his knowledge through engaging lectures, and he is determined to continue inspiring and exciting people with his work as long as he is physically able. He also aims to create interactive tools that are genuinely useful, providing users with a sense of freedom and assurance. He is focused on ensuring the protection of users’ domains and maintaining the quality of services provided, as the digital nature of these tools may lead some to believe they can be easily replicated.
