Thom Berg, owner of CNC Surgeon, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in technical support.
With over three decades of experience to his credit, Mr. Berg has built a successful career in technical support, specializing in troubleshooting and repairing electrical and mechanical components, retrofitting and upgrading machines, training operators and programmers, and developing Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programs. He currently excels as the owner of CNC Surgeon, a position he has held since 2022. CNC Surgeon provides specialized repair and maintenance services for automated control systems and CNC machines, an automated device used in manufacturing to precisely control machining tools like drills, lathes, and mills. These machines are programmed with software to perform tasks such as cutting, drilling, and shaping materials, which can include metals, plastics, and wood. The company offers comprehensive support aimed at improving the performance and efficiency of electronic and mechanical equipment. In this capacity, he provides comprehensive phone, email, and on-site field support for the repair of electronics, mechanical equipment, CNC machines, and automated control systems. His role involves visiting client facilities to address machine issues, which can range from minor adjustments to complete overhauls, such as replacing gears, motors, or bearings.
In addition to his expertise in machine tool and IT industries, he is also proficient in Linux, Microsoft products, Python, HTML, and PHP. Always eager to learn new technologies, his mission is to help clients optimize their operations and achieve their goals. His previous experience includes serving as a service engineer at United Precision, a premium provider of advanced large-frame CNC machining solutions to North American metal-cutting and fabrication manufacturers, from 2021 to 2022, providing service and support for CNC machines. Before that, he was the Acu-Rite service supervisor at HEIDENHAIN Corporation, which develops and manufactures linear and angle encoders, rotary encoders, digital readouts, and CNC controls for demanding positioning tasks, from 2020 to 2021, where he oversaw service operations across the United States. His career at HEIDENHAIN began in 1995, where he also worked for 26 years as a service technician, specializing in troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of precision equipment. Prior to entering the field, he completed coursework in electrical and electronics engineering from Harper College.
Reflecting on his career, Mr. Berg has made a remarkable impact through his dedication to customer satisfaction and exceptional problem-solving abilities. Upon arriving at job sites, he often encounters skepticism from clients due to previous unsuccessful repair attempts. However, within just 15 minutes, he typically resolves issues, quickly proving his expertise and taking great pride in his ability to deliver effective solutions. Despite his success, the industry faces challenges in attracting younger individuals, making it difficult to find skilled technicians. He credits his success to the lessons his father instilled in him during childhood, which laid a strong foundation for both his personal and professional growth. Looking ahead, he plans to expand his business by hiring more employees and contributing to the growth of the machine tool industry. In advising aspiring professionals, he emphasizes not to give up and to keep learning. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, working on model trains, and exploring stereo and electronics.
