Laying a strong educational foundation, Ms. Smothers earned a Bachelor of Science in art and physical education from William Jewell College in 1981 and a master’s degree in secondary education and teaching from Lincoln University in Missouri in 1994. She also holds certifications in K-12 art and K-12 physical education from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, both obtained in 1981. Additionally, she achieved national board certification in art for early adolescence through young adulthood from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, further solidifying her expertise in education.
Ms. Smothers has also contributed to the Missouri Art Education Association, where she has held roles such as youth art month committee chairperson and curriculum chairperson. She has also served as regent, vice-regent, and chaplain for the Jane Randolph Jefferson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and as a donor to the Cole County Historical Society since 2016. Additionally, she authored “Elevating Art Education: Strategies and Tips for National Board Certification,” to share her expertise in the field. Reflecting on her path, she was inspired by her family of educators to pursue a career in teaching. She has dedicated herself to supporting art educators and takes pride in her impactful work with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She is especially honored by award nominations from parents and teachers who recognized her dedication to working one-on-one with students and addressing their individual needs. She attributes her success to her dedication to addressing the unique needs of her students and her commitment to personal and professional growth. She emphasizes the importance of listening to others and offering help where she can. Looking to the future, she is working on a book for art educators on navigating the National Board certification process and is embracing new pursuits like genealogy.
