Laying a strong educational foundation, he earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Tulane University in 1974.
Reflecting on his path, Mr. Godwin’s introduction to construction was deeply influenced by his father’s profession as an engineer. As a child, he spent a lot of time on construction sites, witnessing the building of two of his family’s homes. His passion for the industry deepened during his time in New York, where he lived in a studio apartment within a rental building that was later converted into a co-op. Facing eviction, he successfully fought the case in court, ultimately purchasing the $30,000 apartment with just a $1,000 down payment. As a board member of the co-op, he conducted interviews with prospective buyers, forming connections that shaped his career. One notable relationship was with a design-build business owner from Iran. When she chose to travel with her partner, he offered to oversee her projects, marking the beginning of his construction career. His first assignment was the restoration of a landmark brownstone in Gramercy Park, where he honed his skills under the guidance of her team.

His expertise has also been sought for the development of the town surrounding the ashram.
