The company was founded by his parents, who purchased their first McDonald’s restaurant franchise in 1967. Under his leadership, the organization has grown exponentially and now operates 35 McDonald’s locations across the Greater Chicagoland area.
Since joining his parents in 1990, Mr. Bear has been responsible for overseeing all McDonald’s franchise locations under the Bear Family Restaurants umbrella. His expertise in business strategy, operations and leadership has driven the company to generate approximately $125 million in annual sales. With a team of 1,500 employees, including administrative staff, directors of operations, supervisors, maintenance teams and technology specialists, Mr. Bear ensures that every aspect of the business runs smoothly. His primary focus includes setting the strategic vision for the company, engaging in long-term business planning and fostering a culture of excellence and inclusivity within the organization
A graduate of Northwestern University, Mr. Bear earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1990. His education has been instrumental in shaping his business acumen and leadership approach.
In addition to leading the Bear Family Restaurants, Mr. Bear is actively involved in elected leadership roles within multiple McDonald’s Franchise organizations and currently serves as the Board Chair for the National Owners Association. His leadership within the NOA has helped advocate for franchisee interests while driving innovation in the industry.
Civically active, Mr. Bear and his team at Bear Family Restaurants are deeply involved in local charitable initiatives and community events. His company frequently participates in philanthropic efforts that support various causes, reflecting the organization’s commitment to social responsibility and volunteerism. He is also a co-founder of the Las Olas Bear Family Hebrew School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a role he shares with his parents and siblings. Mr. Bear remains an active member of his synagogue, demonstrating his deep commitment to faith and community service. Giving back to a community that has given him so much over the years is truly inspiring.
Lauded for his work ethic, Mr. Bear has been awarded numerous times, beginning in 2006 when the Business Ledger honored him with an Annual Award for Business Excellence. Subsequently, he received an Illinois Family Business of the Year Award for Community Service from the Family Business Center, Quinlan School of Business, at Loyola University in 2013 as the first franchised, family business to receive this honor. In 2017, Mr. Bear’s company received recognition from the State of Illinois 100th General Assembly House of Representatives for 50 years of dedication to being active and socially responsible members of every community they serve. Among other McDonald’s accolades, he received the distinguished Ronald Award from McDonald’s Corporation in 2018, one of the highest honors given to franchisees.
