His experience also includes managing partner, Borderland Chevrolet GMC Buick from 2021 to 2024, general manager platform at Hatch Auto Group from 2018 to 2021, general manager and platform director at Van Tuyl Automotive from 1988 to 2016, and sales attendant at Ford Motor Company from 1994 to 1996. He also served in the U.S. Army for a decade. He also dedicates his time as a board adviser for the Boy’s Club of America since 2009 and has been an advocate for the Special Olympics since 1988, focusing primarily on children with Down syndrome. As a volunteer board member, he has significantly contributed over 40 years of service. His commitment stems from a personal connection, as his sister, who had Down syndrome, passed away at the age of 64.
Mr. Mermis is also involved with Giving it Back to Kids and has been a member of the National Automobile Dealers Association since 2000. His additional affiliations include the SouthEastern Arizona Governments Organization, the General Motors Minority Dealers Association, Home Economics Urban Home Development, and the Southeast Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Laying an educational foundation, he earned an associate degree in 1988, a Bachelor of Business Administration in business, management, marketing, and related support services from the Roswell campus of Eastern New Mexico University in 1984, and a bachelor’s degree from Western New Mexico University in 1990.
Reflecting on his path, Mr. Mermis has made a significant impact in the automotive industry by mentoring individuals who start at the entry level into successful professionals. His most notable achievement lies in his ability to guide these individuals through various career advancements, enabling them to assume roles such as service writers, managers, and even store operators. Having risen through the ranks himself, starting from a detail position and progressing through roles in the parts department, sales, finance, and ultimately management, he firmly believes in the potential for anyone to seize opportunities and thrive in their chosen paths. Rather than focusing on “educating” in a traditional sense, he prefers to suggest various pathways for advancement, empowering individuals to take charge of their futures and achieve brighter outcomes.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Mermis was honored with the Ford Walk Around Presentation award and named Southeastern Regional Director of the Year. He attributes his success to the speedbumps he has encountered along the way. He embraces a personal philosophy that redefines failure as “First Attempt In Learning.” Rather than avoiding his mistakes, he actively seeks to extract valuable lessons from each experience. This mindset has transformed setbacks into stepping stones, enabling him to grow and evolve continuously throughout his life. Looking to the future, he has the ambitious goal of establishing five or six additional dealerships. He also aspires to expand his empire to pave the way for his children to take over the company and continue his legacy.
