Mr. Reid is recognized for his contributions as a prominent marine biologist, owner, founder and director of algae production at Qualitas-Health Inc. For over a decade, he has been instrumental in his role, leading efforts in the design and build of the company’s facility in Texas and its efforts to process techniques used to produce Omega-3 oils from algae. As part of his daily duties, Mr. Reid strives to guarantee consistent on-site product production and all production processes. Moreover, he is involved in the business’s expansion and development. Mr. Reid’s expertise in organic aquaculture and algae culture, including processing for Omega 3 oils and other high-value products, has been pivotal to his success and tenure with Qualitas-Health Inc.
Transitioning into the aquaculture market after beginning his career cultivating fish and shrimp after college, Mr. Reid eventually co-founded The Shrimp Store. This restaurant garnered recognition by being featured in several Texas news shows and magazines for his work in producing organic and conventional shrimp products, redfish and seatrout. From there, he owned and managed the Permian Sea Shrimp Company and Permian Sea Organics from 1998 to 2008, an inland shrimp farm that produced over 300,000 pounds of shrimp annually. Mr. Reid also excelled as a senior research scientist of algae at Palmer Labs and 8 Rivers Capital between 2008 and 2011 and as a research facility manager at the Center of Excellence from 2011 to 2013. His decision to pivot by forming Qualitas-Health Inc. stems from his realization of innovation, the ability to leverage existing infrastructure, and the increasing popularity of Omega-3.
Besides these initiatives, Mr. Reid owns Barts Bay Armor, a business that crafts high-quality wading boots to enhance comfort and performance for fishermen navigating various aquatic environments. As a seasoned fisherman, he draws satisfaction from providing the public with his patented product.
In preparation for his future, Mr. Reid obtained a Bachelor of Science in marine science from Texas A&M University in Galveston in 1986 and a Master of Science in marine biology at the university’s Corpus Christi campus in 1989. Besides his education, he is active in his professional community as a member of the Coastal Conservation Association and the Algae Biomass Organization.
Mr. Reid’s industry success led to several U.S. patents. He also authored ‘Shrimping West Texas: The Rise and Fall of the Permian Sea Shrimp Company’ via Texas Tech University Press in 2024. Some of his other notable accomplishments include his work with Nannochloropsis, a specific type of algae, of which his operation has been recognized as the largest and most productive farm dedicated to growing. Mr. Reid has also been busy harvesting microalgae and extracting valuable oils cost-effectively, potentially revolutionizing the industry. Earlier in his career, he contributed to developing hatchery techniques during the 1980s for breeding redfish and speckled trout. These techniques are now used by state hatcheries to restock bays and waterways in the Gulf Coast region.
Mr. Reid credits his success to his faith, his wife’s ongoing support and encouragement, and his children, who often assist with social media and other aspects of the business. In the coming years, he intends to transform his Omega-3 product into a leading choice in the market. He also plans to innovate biodegradable and renewable plastic alternatives, focusing on fishing lures.
