Andrew Jay Johnson, owner of Frictionless Design Build, The Union Hotel and Sign of the Buck LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements and leadership in entrepreneurship.
Mr. Johnson’s career is marked by a series of significant roles that have shaped his expertise in the construction and hospitality industries. Since 2024, he has been the driving force behind Frictionless Design Build, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, where his passion for building and renovating properties is realized.
Beyond his work at Frictionless Design Build, Mr. Johnson’s entrepreneurial spirit includes several other ventures, including being the chief operating officer of The Union Hotel in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, since 2020. The historic hotel features various amenities, with a focus on style and convenience. The Union Hotel offers 12 guest suites, which all encompass a living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette. Each suite is named after a distinguished historical figure, like Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Further cementing his influence in the business world, Mr. Johnson launched Sign of the Buck LLC, which he co-founded in 2021. Sign of the Buck is a new restaurant on the first floor of The Union Hotel. The restaurant serves brunch on Sundays, lunch six days per week, and dinner seven evenings per week under the direction of local chef Josh Fidler. First established as a tavern and boarding house in 1804, the newly renovated eatery can accommodate up to 100 patrons and features a full bar offering a range of spirits, craft beer and live music.
Earlier in his hospitality career, Mr. Johnson was the chief operating officer at James Gettys Hotel from 2019 to 2020, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership in hospitality management. He also honed his skills in other fields as a senior project manager at Alion Science and Technology (now Huntington Ingalls Industries), a defense and space manufacturing company based in McLean, Virginia, in 2019.
Additionally, Mr. Johnson garnered extensive experience with the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command from 2009 to 2019. During this time, he served as a management analyst, program manager, regional program manager and senior program analyst. Mr. Johnson’s work involved overseeing budgets for modernization and maintenance projects and managing the critical Petroleum Oil Lubricants program, which supervises all fuel tanks and pipelines for the United States Navy.
Mr. Johnson’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Elon University in North Carolina, which he completed in 2005. This education laid the groundwork for his success in various leadership roles by equipping him with essential business acumen.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Johnson is deeply committed to civic engagement. He has served as a board member on the Historical Architectural Review Board since 2024 and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Johnson’s philanthropic efforts in Gettysburg reflect his dedication to community development.
