William A. Komlos, MS, owner of Arc Tech LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in welding and engineering.

Mr. Komlos has dedicated more than 40 years to building his expertise in the world of welding. His career began as a welder with the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company and various other shops immediately after graduating from college in the 1980s. During this early stretch of his professional life, Mr. Komlos gained great experience working on major projects, including serving as the lead inspector on the construction of components for the nuclear reactor at the Washington Public Power Supply System. In 1985, he stepped into the role of quality assurance manager at United Precision Machine & Engineering.

Subsequently, Mr. Komlos left United Precision in 1991 to join Mark Steel Corporation as a quality assurance manager and welding supervisor. He also took on project management duties while working with Mark Steel Corporation, overseeing an effort to create a nuclear bomb simulation with the same materials used to manufacture submarines. This project cost $9 million, demonstrating Mr. Komlos’ trustworthiness and ability to deliver on major assignments.

Having established his reputation across nearly two decades of hard work, Mr. Komlos launched his own company, Arc Tech LLC, in 1999. As the owner of Arc Tech, he has helmed a wide range of projects, such as welding engineering for tanker repairs through Polish service centers, consulting with the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers, and performing multiple failure analysis assignments for Barrick Gold, a major international mining company. Mr. Komlos’ greatest career highlight came in recent years, when he designed and inspected welds for mission-critical components for NASA’s Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE). His insight played a crucial role in ensuring the success of this experiment, which will, in turn, aid future missions to Mars.

In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Komlos also devotes time to educating up-and-coming welders and engineers. He was a welding instructor at Salt Lake Community College (formerly Utah Technical College) for 12 years and currently teaches classes in magnetic particle testing in order to detect minuscule cracks in structures. Mr. Komlos also contributes as the chair of the American Welding Society’s Welding Inspection Handbook committee, further showcasing his commitment to uplifting the industry as a whole. He strongly believes in the importance of making the Welding Inspection Handbook understandable for the public at large.

Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Komlos set a strong foundation in his own education. He initially obtained a bachelor’s degree in English before shifting his focus to welding. In 2009, Mr. Komlos earned a Master of Science in structural engineering from The University of Utah. Committed to lifelong improvement, he has bolstered his knowledge with numerous classes, including being certified as a welding inspector by the American Welding Society in 1982 and again in 1998. Mr. Komlos has received additional certification as a level III nondestructive examiner with specialties in magnetic particle testing and liquid penetrant testing from The American Society of Nondestructive Testing. He has been granted credentials as a welding educator, welding supervisor and welding engineer through the American Welding Society.

Outside of his work life, Mr. Komlos is a loving husband and father to one daughter. He finds relaxation through skiing, learning about art history, and camping. Looking ahead, Mr. Komlos is focused on his continued efforts guiding updates to the Welding Inspection Handbook and other American Welding Society publications. Beyond that, he looks forward to continuing to make a difference in the lives of those he works with and for.
