Ms. Hirschman has established a remarkable career in interior design, marked by more than two decades of leadership and innovation. Since 2004, she has owned Karen Hirschman Designs Inc. in the Puget Sound area of Washington, serving as her firm’s lead interior designer. Widely recognized for her expertise in residential remodeling, her approach to whole-house renovations involves overseeing every detail, from relocating homeowners and their belongings to transforming living spaces and ensuring seamless transitions back into the home. In addition to working closely with her clients, Ms. Hirschman spends much of her time mentoring new designers in her studio, guiding them through the early stages of their careers.
Before founding her firm, Ms. Hirschman contributed her talents as an interior designer with the Washington chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers from 2003 to 2015. Her dedication to the field was also reflected in her role as an instructor at Clover Park Technical College, where she taught interior design business courses for over a year.
Ms. Hirschman’s academic background laid a strong foundation for her career achievements. After returning to the U.S. from Europe in 1979 due to her husband’s career, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture from the University of Memphis in 1982. Driven by a desire for comprehensive understanding and professionalism in design, she later completed a bachelor’s degree in interior design at Clover Park Technical College in 2004. Ms. Hirschman holds certification as an associate kitchen and bath designer and as a certified aging-in-place specialist, further enhancing her technical proficiency.
In addition to her primary responsibilities as a business owner, Ms. Hirschman’s professional affiliations have underscored her standing in the field. She is an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers and a member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. She is also a past president of the Washington state chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. Ms. Hirschman’s leadership within these organizations has significantly contributed to her reputation as an expert in residential interior design, while demonstrating her commitment to advancing industry standards and supporting fellow professionals.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Ms. Hirschman has been involved in community initiatives. Most notably, she spent several years volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, contributing her skills to community development projects.
In light of Ms. Hirschman’s success, she has been recognized with multiple honors, including interior design recognitions from the Master Builders Association between 2008 and 2010. Meanwhile, her civic commitments earned her two volunteer accolades.
Ms. Hirschman credits much of her professional success to the unwavering support of her family, especially her husband, whose encouragement has been instrumental throughout her journey. She also notes the mentorship she received over the years, particularly from Nicole Buchanan, whose guidance inspired Ms. Hirschman to launch her own mentorship program for emerging designers. Although delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this program began in 2022 and expanded into a commercial space in 2023, reflecting Ms. Hirschman’s belief that a professional environment fosters credibility and growth.
Ms. Hirschman aspires for her name to be synonymous with trustworthiness and client satisfaction as a prominent local business owner, delivering results that align with clients’ visions even when challenges arise. She also draws great fulfillment as a mentor and looks forward to helping students launch their own businesses and careers.
