Mr. Merchant has built a distinguished career defined by his commitment to advancing technology in the service of public safety and security. As the president, owner and principal consultant of MTS Intelligent Security Solutions in New Jersey since 2005, he has led the company with a focus on delivering innovative technological solutions that enhance safety for schools, police departments and other clients.
Among his many responsibilities, Mr. Merchant manages daily business operations and personnel and interfaces directly with clients while ensuring that technology is applied effectively to meet each client’s unique needs. Under his leadership, the company has become an early adopter of analytics applications, helping clients leverage data-driven insights for improved security outcomes. Mr. Merchant’s creative approach and dedication to relationship building have established him as an expert in the application of analytical technology.
Before founding MTS Intelligent Security Solutions, Mr. Merchant served as a principal at IBM Global Services (now IBM Consulting) from 1999 to 2004. In this role, he was the homeland security practice leader and worked closely with the Port Authority during the events of September 11th. Mr. Merchant’s work at IBM was marked by a commitment to integrating advanced technologies into critical infrastructure protection and emergency response systems.
Between 1985 and 1999, Mr. Merchant was a principal and practice leader at Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., where he specialized in technology solutions for intelligence agencies, such as the CIA. He designed and implemented unique networks to support agency operations and led a team during Operation Desert Storm that developed a hybrid network combining tactical and commercial technologies. This system enabled the rapid transfer of overhead imagery files from Washington, D.C. to Saudi Arabia within one week, an unprecedented achievement that prevented unnecessary troop deployments and revolutionized military planning capabilities.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Merchant worked as a flight test engineer for experimental aircraft while attending college and shortly after graduation. He then joined the U.S. Navy, where he gained invaluable experience working in one of the world’s largest computer data centers. This exposure inspired Mr. Merchant’s transition from mechanical engineering to computing, a field in which he has remained ever since.
Mr. Merchant received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering with a minor in electrical engineering from The College of New Jersey in 1983. The skills acquired during his studies have been instrumental throughout his career.
A member of several industry organizations, Mr. Merchant is active in the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association International and SAE International. His contributions extend beyond his professional roles, supporting animal rescue initiatives through donations of free systems and providing pro bono security installations for churches. As an author, Mr. Merchant has published numerous articles on the application of analytics and evolving technology, sharing his insights with peers across the industry.
Throughout his professional journey, Mr. Merchant has designed and overseen the construction of joint tactical command posts in Alameda, California, and various command centers for government clients. He is particularly well known for his expertise in both technical innovation and customer relationship management. In light of his success, while working for the CIA as part of Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., Mr. Merchant received a Certificate of Appreciation from Lieutenant General Eichelberger, the chief of staff of intelligence for the U.S. Army, and was inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame by the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence.
Mr. Merchant credits much of his success to these guiding principles as well as to the influence of his father, whose dedication to customer care left a lasting impression on him.
