Mr. Cockrell’s professional journey in construction and lumber spans three decades, marked by steady progression through increasing responsibilities and a deep commitment to excellence. Since 2019, he has served as the president and owner of Big D Lumber Company LLC in Richardson, Texas, overseeing daily operations and leading sales efforts. Under his leadership, the company has expanded significantly, now operating three lumberyards and a door-and-trim facility, with preparations to open a fourth yard. The business employs more than 90 individuals, reflecting Mr. Cockrell’s dedication to growth and operational excellence.

Having initially worked for Big D Lumber Company LLC from 2006 to 2012, Mr. Cockrell served as a sales representative, leveraging his extensive background in framing and construction to assist customers and colleagues with client-related challenges. Mr. Cockrell’s ability to apply practical knowledge gained from years as a framer distinguished him within the company and contributed to his reputation as a problem-solver.

In 2013, Mr. Cockrell left Big D to join Builders FirstSource Inc. as a sales representative. Recognizing the importance of corporate experience for further advancement, he joined the organization to broaden his industry expertise. Mr. Cockrell’s tenure there provided valuable insights into large-scale operations and customer relations, ultimately leading him back to Big D Lumber Company in 2019 as its new owner.

Earlier in his career, following the acquisition of Slaughter Industries by Universal Forest Products, now UFP Industries Inc., in 2005, Mr. Cockrell worked as a sales representative at the new entity, where he remained until 2006. From 1996 to 2004, he worked for C&F Construction and Metrotex Framing, where he held responsibilities in estimating and purchasing. During this period, Mr. Cockrell managed bidding processes and procurement for one of the largest turnkey framing contractors in the region. Although he aspired for a partnership within the company, opportunities for advancement were limited at that time.

Mr. Cockrell’s career began much earlier, shaped by formative experiences working for his uncle’s framing company during his teenage years. After relocating to Albuquerque, New Mexico, he partnered with another individual to start his own business before moving to Dallas in pursuit of greater opportunities in the mid-1990s. These early experiences as a framer remain among Mr. Cockrell’s proudest achievements, providing a foundation for his later success in lumber sales and business management.

Following high school, Mr. Cockrell completed college coursework in criminal justice. Apart from his schooling, he has maintained active involvement in several industry organizations, including the Dallas Builders Association, the Greater Fort Worth Builders Association and the Lumbermen’s Association of Texas. These affiliations have enabled Mr. Cockrell to stay connected with industry trends and best practices while contributing to the broader professional community.

Beyond his business endeavors, Mr. Cockrell is committed to civic engagement through volunteer work with organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project and Helping A Hero. His contributions reflect a desire to give back to those who have served their country and support community initiatives.

Among his recognitions, Mr. Cockrell was ranked number 64 nationally by LBM Journal, underscoring his impact on the lumber and building materials industry. He attributes much of his success to influential mentors and a strong work ethic. He also believes that commitment and perseverance are essential qualities for achieving professional goals.

Looking ahead, Mr. Cockrell is focused on growing his business while upholding the highest standards of integrity and service. He places great importance on building lasting relationships and maintaining a solid reputation within the industry, aspiring to be regarded as an admired leader whom others seek out for collaboration and partnership.
