Mr. Knapp has established a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in the automatic screw machine and carbide tooling industry. His professional journey is marked by significant leadership roles, technical expertise, and a commitment to both business growth and community service.
For the past 20 years, Mr. Knapp has served as the owner and president of DMC Associates in Perrysburg, Ohio. Under his stewardship since 2007, the company has expanded remarkably, tripling in size. Mr. Knapp attributes this success to his unwavering focus on customer relationships and his ability to educate clients while continuously expanding his own knowledge base.
Before his entrepreneurial venture at DMC Associates, Mr. Knapp spent over 20 years at M&S Manufacturing, advancing from operator to plant manager between 1984 and 2006. During this period, he developed deep hands-on expertise in machining, operating equipment, supervising operations and training individuals ranging from high school students to industry newcomers in machine operation, rebuilding, setup and blueprint reading. This foundational experience not only honed Mr. Knapp’s technical skills but also established him as an expert in automatic screw machine processes and carbide tooling.
Mr. Knapp completed coursework toward a bachelor’s degree in business at Jackson Community College. This academic pursuit laid the groundwork for his business acumen and strategic decision-making abilities. Additionally, Mr. Knapp received a PRO3 certification from Seco Tools, further demonstrating his dedication to maintaining high standards of technical proficiency within his field.
Mr. Knapp’s professional affiliations reflect his commitment to advancing the industry. He is an active member of the Industrial Supply Association, the Independent Business Council and the National Machine Guarding Association. These memberships have provided valuable opportunities for networking and professional development throughout Mr. Knapp’s career.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Knapp has demonstrated a strong commitment to civic engagement and community service. He volunteered as a firefighter with the local fire department for 30 years, retiring in 2018. Throughout his career, Mr. Knapp’s approach has emphasized leveraging industry connections and staying abreast of emerging tools and techniques to deliver optimal solutions for customers. He has also recognized the importance of mentorship and collaboration, noting that his wife’s partnership is integral to DMC Associates’ tenure in managing payroll and assisting with accounting responsibilities following her retirement as a school business official. To support sound decision-making as an executive, Mr. Knapp also consults regularly with three trusted advisers. Their guidance ensures prudent management practices and strategic growth.
Mr. Knapp’s success was influenced by his father’s legacy in the screw machine manufacturing business, who began as an operator before progressing to supervisory roles. When faced with the closure of a company with 12 plants, a pivotal opportunity arose when a representative from DMC Associates encouraged him to transition into sales, which ultimately led him to become the business’s owner.
Mr. Knapp’s contributions have been recognized through several honors, including the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Independent Business Council in 2023 and the Outstanding Service Award in 2024. Looking ahead, he plans to retire from active business operations so he can enjoy life with his wife, travel extensively and pursue their shared hobbies.
