James L. Evans

Title: Owner
Company:
Bob’s Diner
Location:
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

James L. Evans, Owner at Bob’s Diner, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the Food Service Industry.

Mr. Evans has overseen the daily operations of Bob’s Diner in Philadelphia, a beloved neighborhood institution with nearly eight decades of history. As the restaurant’s owner since 1993, he has responsibilities that encompass opening the restaurant each morning, preparing signature breakfast dishes, such as omelets and pancakes, managing both front- and back-of-house activities, and supervising staff to ensure consistent quality and customer satisfaction. Mr. Evans has built a reputation for fostering a welcoming environment where regulars and newcomers alike feel at home.

Over his more than 30-year tenure as the diner’s owner, Mr. Evans has remained committed to hands-on leadership, often stepping in wherever needed, whether cooking during peak hours or washing dishes when short-staffed. This approach reflects the values instilled in Mr. Evans’ parents, who believe that if a job is worth doing, it should be done right.

Before acquiring Bob’s Diner, Mr. Evans gained extensive experience across various sectors of retail management. He spent over five years with Pine Tree Pride grocery stores before moving to Woolworths for nearly a decade, where he managed multiple locations but found advancement opportunities limited by shifting corporate metrics. Mr. Evans then revitalized a struggling Woolworths store in Norristown, Pennsylvania, making it profitable for three consecutive years before accepting a better-paying position with G.C. Murphy’s. Later roles included a management fast-track placement at Toys R Us.

The opportunity to purchase Bob’s Diner arose unexpectedly when Mr. Evans’s brother, who frequented the establishment, suggested he take over after financial constraints prevented his own acquisition. After thoughtful discussions with the previous owner and legal counsel, Mr. Evans took ownership on February 1, 1993.

Mr. Evans holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Temple University in Philadelphia, having graduated in 1976. The skills acquired through this academic achievement have supported his ability to manage complex operations efficiently while fostering strong relationships with employees and patrons alike.

Active in professional and community engagement, Mr. Evans holds membership with the Roxborough Development Corporation and the Flourtown Swim Club, both organizations that further connect him with local business leaders and community members. Additionally, he serves as a contributor to the Progeria Research Foundation and as a donor to charitable initiatives, such as the WMGK Turkey Drop, organized by Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc.

Mr. Evans’s commitment to professional excellence has been recognized through numerous accolades. His restaurant was featured among the Most Vital Philly Restaurants of The 76 in 2025. Notably, The 76 is The Philadelphia Inquirer’s annual, unranked list of the most vital restaurants in the Philadelphia area, reflecting the city’s diverse and vibrant dining scene. Mr. Evans also earned repeated honors from The Daily News between 2007 and 2010 for Best Breakfast in Town, Best Takeout and Best Family Dining. Additional distinctions have included Best Diner and Best Cook, as well as Best Waitress and Best Cashier, recognizing two of his employees. These awards were especially meaningful as they reflected direct support from loyal customers across the tristate area.

Throughout his career, Mr. Evans has distinguished himself through an unwavering work ethic and readiness to take on any task necessary for the success of his business. He attributes much of his success to hard work and initiative, never hesitating to address maintenance issues himself or fill in for absent staff members. Mr. Evans credits his staff for their loyalty and contributions, acknowledging that their collective effort makes sustained excellence possible.

A defining moment in Mr. Evans’s career came in 1999 when he made Bob’s Diner one of the first smoke-free restaurants in Philadelphia. Motivated by concerns for his health and that of his staff, he implemented the policy despite warnings from the previous owner and loyal patrons about potential financial risks. The transition was challenging at first but ultimately led to widespread community appreciation. Families who once avoided the smoky atmosphere began returning, and public recognition followed, including a press conference held by then-Councilman Michael Nutter commending Mr. Evans’s leadership on public health issues. This bold decision solidified the diner’s standing as a community cornerstone.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Evans draws inspiration from family role models, including his oldest brother, a decorated U.S. Air Force veteran who later became chief of police at SEPTA, and several mentors whose wisdom shaped his outlook on integrity, humility and inclusivity. Looking ahead, Mr. Evans plans to retire from active management while ensuring that Bob’s Diner remains true to its legacy as a neighborhood gathering place. He hopes to be remembered for cultivating an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome regardless of background or profession, a place where spirited conversations among regulars enrich the fabric of community life.
