NAME: Otto Rankin

Title: Owner and Chief Executive Officer
Company:
Pacific Shades Custom Design & Automation
Location:
Phoenix, Arizona, United States

Thomas Rankin, owner and chief executive officer at Pacific Shades Custom Design & Automation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements and leadership in the Drapery and Window Coverings Industry.

With a career spanning three decades, Mr. Rankin has distinguished himself as an expert in the drapery and window coverings sector. Widely respected within the industry for his years of hands-on experience and a commitment to advancing the field, he has served as the owner and chief executive officer of Pacific Shades Custom Design & Automation since 2016, a company recognized for its comprehensive design-assistance services, its fabrication of soft furnishings, such as draperies, Roman shades, and fancy-work valances, and the production and installation of advanced window shade systems.

At the helm of his organization, Mr. Rankin oversees the fabrication of draperies for motorized systems, coordinates daily workroom operations, and assesses fabric yardage requirements and production priorities with his team. To ensure seamless project execution, he meets regularly with designers, architects, builders, homeowners and field crews. He also inspects project sites, monitors installation progress, and manages professional correspondence with clients and industry partners regarding upcoming projects. Among other objectives, Mr. Rankin collaborates with office personnel on project scheduling and installers while supporting team operations.

Under Mr. Rankin’s leadership, the business has become a multistate operation serving clients in his home state of Arizona, California, Texas, Michigan, Florida, and Illinois, as well as the Caribbean. The company’s reputation is built on client satisfaction, as most new business comes from referrals rather than advertising. In fact, many clients request services for multiple properties, a testament to their confidence in the quality of work delivered by Mr. Rankin’s team. Additionally, as a strong supporter of Lutron, a leading manufacturer of shades, motors and electronic components, he has fostered a close collaboration that has been integral to many of his projects.

Before founding Pacific Shades Custom Design & Automation, Mr. Rankin was the co-owner of another draperies and shades company from 2009 to 2016. During this period, he played a pivotal role in establishing the business within the competitive window coverings sector. Between 2003 and 2009, Mr. Rankin served as the general manager for another organization within the industry, where he was instrumental in building the brand’s presence and expanding its reach. Earlier in his career, he worked in installation and sales for various companies over a span of more than 10 years, starting in 1991. This foundational experience provided him with deep insight into both the technical aspects of installation and effective client relations.

Mr. Rankin began his professional journey as a commercial fisherman in 1987. He chose to transition into the drapery industry soon thereafter, a path inspired by learning to sew from his mother and grandmother.

Mr. Rankin completed coursework in education at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Throughout his career, he has maintained active involvement in various professional organizations, such as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, and served on the board of the Arizona National Association of the Remodeling Industry and the American Society of Interior Designers. Meanwhile, Mr. Rankin’s civic engagement has included volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International.

In light of his success, Mr. Rankin has been recognized through several prestigious awards from Windows Fashion VISION, including First Place and Second Place in motorized window fashions in 2018 and 2019, respectively, and, in 2020, First Place in top treatments and Second Place in commercial projects. He attributes his success to patience and hard work, qualities that have enabled him to build lasting relationships with respected design firms and builders while avoiding many adverse experiences common in the industry.

Mr. Rankin enjoys traveling with his wife, who is also involved in the business. They often travel together to the Midwest for work projects due to his fondness for the region. Looking ahead, he remains passionate about his profession and intends to continue operating his business while supporting the dedicated team that contributes to its ongoing success.
