With three decades of experience, Ms. Nicolaisen has built a successful career in small business, human resources, and education leadership. She currently serves as the owner of Black Hills Consulting, a role she has held since 2024, where she assists with recruiting, writing employee handbooks and job descriptions, and ensuring compliance with federal and state laws. Her prior experience includes working as a human resources consultant with Alternative HR LLC from 2022 to 2024, director of human resources for Rapid City Area Schools from 2017 to 2021, and director of human resources at MBW Company, EON Inc. from 2015 to 2017. She has also held roles as an adjunct faculty member at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and as a school mental health coordinator for Greater Minnesota Family Services. Earlier in her career, she served as president of the Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs and worked in alternative education for River Bend Education District from 1999 to 2010.
Ms. Nicolaisen is actively involved in several networking groups, served as past president of the Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs for 12 years, and presented at the regional chapter conference of the Society for Human Resource Management in 2024. Laying a solid educational foundation, she earned a Bachelor of Science in secondary education and teaching, a Master of Science in organizational leadership and administration, an educational specialist degree in administration, all from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and also holds certifications in professional human resources. In the coming years, she aims to support small businesses, drawing from her experience as a principal in alternative education. She is also passionate about advocating for small businesses, helping them develop strong HR capabilities to compete with larger corporations. She offers tailored consulting services and an “on-demand” service, providing ongoing support through monthly consultations. Her ultimate goal is to expand her business, securing more consistent clients and reaching a workload of 30 hours per week to achieve personal and professional fulfillment.
