Karlene M. Olesuk, owner of Olesuk Tax Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in taxes and insurance.
While Ms. Olesuk’s professional life has spanned more than 30 years, she has only shifted to working in the field of taxes in the last decade. Her career started as an administrative intern for Chicago Sinfonietta in 1993. From there, Ms. Olesuk pursued various roles in the performing arts, including as assistant producer and house manager for Northern Illinois University, advertising stylist and customer service representative for Shaw Suburban Media, creative assistant for Bernard of Hollywood, marketing and promotions coordinator for the Guild Complex, and marketing intern for Northern Illinois University’s School of Theatre and Dance, among others. In 2015, she pivoted her vocation, taking over Olesuk Tax Services from her father. Ms. Olesuk has quickly proven herself in this new field, providing reliable service to her clients, including continued operation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Concurrently with that, she has contributed as a receptionist and marketing coordinator for Gasperini Insurance Agency, an office coordinator for Upstream Investment Partners, and a tax preparer for Exemplar Accounting & Tax Advisors.
Prior to beginning her career, Ms. Olesuk built a solid academic foundation. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in visual and performing arts and arts administration with a minor in business administration from Northern Illinois University in 1995. Following that, Ms. Olesuk completed coursework at Roosevelt University and earned a master’s degree in performing arts management from Columbia College Chicago in 2002. She has further bolstered her credentials with a range of certifications. Ms. Olesuk trained in computer software at Drake University and attended the University of Illinois Tax School. She has been certified in volunteer income tax assistance and tax counseling for the elderly by the Internal Revenue Service, regional state tax by The Chicago Tax Club, mental health first aid by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, and life insurance by the state of Illinois.
Ms. Olesuk’s accomplishments have been commemorated with several awards, including the Silver Cord in Recognition of Student Excellence in Volunteerism from McHenry County College and the Albert P. Weisman Memorial Scholarship from the Albert P. Weisman Award Committee. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys playing oboe and piano, attending retreats and conferences, and taking road trips. Looking to the future, Ms. Olesuk aims to ensure long-term stability for Olesuk Tax Services even as technology in the field is rapidly changing. Specifically, she plans to transition to cloud-based operations. Ms. Olesuk also intends to pursue further certifications, such as becoming a certified public accountant, which would open her up to provide a wider range of services to her clients.
